Zambia is a land-locked jewel set in Southern Africa. It takes its name from the Zambezi River which runs from the northeast corner of the country to form its southern border. At almost 280,000 square miles, Zambia is about the size of France, Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland combined. 8 countries touch its border: Congo DR, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Angola.

More than 70% of Zambia's vegetation is miombo woodland, comprised of a mixture of savannahs and clumps of trees and bushes. This lush vegetation supports a rich variety of wildlife and birdlife. In fact, some 700 species of birds have been recorded in Zambia. There are 19 national parks and 31 protected game management areas in Zambia -- making it one of the most special areas in Africa for game viewing. The relatively small number of lodges and camps contribute to the "wild" feeling in the parks and it is possible to game view all day and not come across another vehicle. Zambia is also home to the walking safari. Most lodges and camps offer a morning or afternoon walk in the bush, and for the more adventurous, you might want to try an overnight (or longer) mobile walking safari.
