Depart on your overnight flight to London. (Note: Depending on flight schedules, passengers west of the Mississippi may have to depart one day earlier.) Day 2 Arrive Nairobi Arrive in London early this morning where you connect to the Nairobi-bound flight. Jambo and welcome to Kenya! You will be met and transferred to your hotel. Nairobi Safari Park Day 3 Nairobi-Arusha-Lake Manyara (BLD) Drive to Arusha today where you stop for lunch before continuing on to Lake Manyara. The lake lies in a depressed valley with the brown and red cliffs of the escarpment rising strikingly on one side. Day 4 Lake Manyara-Serengeti (BLD) After breakfast, spend the morning on a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Thanks to the wide variety of habitats found inside the park, game is plentiful. Be on the lookout for the graceful impala, the mischievous baboon and much more. About midday continue to the Mto Wa Mbu Village for lunch and an afternoon of exploration of the village. You'll have time to meet some of the local tribes people and visit a school or a church. Return to the lodge for lunch and then drive across the hilly countryside of Ngorongoro as you continue to the Serengeti. The name Serengeti is derived from the Maasai word "siringet", which means endless plains. Appropriately named, every year the Serengeti plays host to perhaps the most impressive migration of herbivores found in the world. Game-viewing is exciting year-round, as the Big Cats are in abundance. Day 5 Serengeti (BLD) The short grass plains of the Serengeti combined with an abundant source of food in large herds of zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo, make the Serengeti an ideal place to spot cheetah on the hunt. Cheetahs (unlike lions and leopards) will hunt during the day. Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives. Day 6 Serengeti-Ngorongoro (BLD) Your morning departure takes you first to Olduvai Gorge, site of Mary and Louis Leakey's famous discovery of "homo habilis". The Gorge gets its name from the Sansevieria bush that grows in the area and is named Olduvai by the Masai. Olduvai was actually first discovered by the German entomologist Kattwinkel, but came to worldwide prominence after the Leakey's discovery in 1959. After time to walk through the simple museum, continue to your lodge on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. Day 7 Ngorongoro (BLD) After breakfast, descend into Ngorongoro Crater for an amazing day of game viewing. The crater is home to a wide variety of both herbivores and carnivores. Zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and eland are abundant. With such a rich food supply, carnivores like lion, hyenas and leopard are also at home in the crater. Watch for the kori bustard (the world's largest flying bird) to see if you can spot its elaborate territorial display during breeding season. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor and then continue exploring the distinct areas of the crater: forest, open grassland, swamps and lakes. Day 8 Ngorongoro-Tarangire (BLD) Leaving Ngorongoro, drive south towards Tarangire National Park. After settling in at the lodge, enjoy an afternoon game drive. Thanks to the permanent water supply of the Tarangire River, the park is a dry-season haven for huge herds of wildebeest, zebra and other plains game. Day 9 Tarangire-Zanzibar Stone Town (B) Return to Arusha for lunch and then take a light aircraft flight to the Spice Island of Zanzibar. Transfer to your hotel for a night in Stone Town which has remained virtually unchanged for the past 200 years. Day 10 Zanzibar Beach (BD) This morning, transfer to your beach-front hotel for a 3-night relaxing stay along Zanzibar's breezy shores. Day 11 & 12 Zanzibar Beach (BD) Enjoy two days at leisure. Unique wildlife species are found on the island of Zanzibar. You might want to take an optional tour to the Jozani Forest in search of the distinct Kirk's red colobus monkey, one of the rarest primates in Africa. Zanzibar is known as the "Spice Island" and the smell of cloves can be intoxicating. Why not add an optional "Spice Tour" one day?Day 13 Zanzibar-Depart (B) Fly to Nairobi where you connect to the overnight flight to London. Day 14 Arrive USA Arrive in London early this morning and continue on the USA-bound flight, arriving later today.
